Black Smoke Maine Coons
A black cat with a secret: solid black on the surface, but with a bright white undercoat that flashes through when the fur moves or parts.
Smoke is one of the more dramatic Maine Coon colors. The cat appears almost entirely solid black at rest, but the base of each hair is white rather than black, so any movement – a shake, a stretch, a breeze – reveals a shimmer of white at the roots. This happens because of the inhibitor gene, which suppresses pigment near the base of the hair shaft. Kittens are often born looking closer to solid black and develop more visible “smoke” contrast as their coat matures.
