Black Tabby (a.k.a. Brown Tabby) Maine Coons
The classic "wild-looking" Maine Coon coat: warm brown background with bold black stripes, swirls, or spots.
This is the original, old-style Maine Coon color, and the one most people picture when they think of the breed. The background hair is a warm tawny brown, overlaid with dense black markings that can appear as a classic “bullseye” swirl pattern, narrow mackerel stripes, or spots, depending on which tabby pattern the cat carries. Look for the “M” marking on the forehead, dark rings around the tail, and dark “eyeliner” — all hallmarks of the tabby gene. Eyes tend to be gold or green. You’ll sometimes see this color called “brown tabby” rather than “black tabby” — both refer to the same pattern.
