“Torbie” is short for tortoiseshell-tabby: this coat combines the random, patched coloring of a tortoiseshell with visible tabby striping within each patch, rather than solid blocks of color. The result is a coat with both black-tabby sections and red/orange-tabby sections swirled together in a pattern unique to each individual cat. Because the gene responsible for red coloring is carried on the X chromosome, torbies (like torties) are almost always female.
